The only active duty base in the LA area, Los Angeles Air Force Base is the home of the 61st Air Base Wing and Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) - the Air Force's premier space acquisition center. The 61st Air Base Wing provides medical, civil engineering, communications, contracting, chaplain, security, logistics, personnel, readiness and quality-of-life services impacting 84 units and more than 204,000 active duty, civilian and retired personnel in the Los Angeles area - including the Space and Missile Systems Center. It manages $60 million budget and $608 million in plant assets, with 564 facilities. The Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC), a subordinate unit of the Air Force Space Command at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, is the center of technical excellence for researching, developing and purchasing military space systems. The center is also responsible for on-orbit check-out, testing, sustainment and maintenance of military satellite constellations and other Department of Defense space systems. The center has an annual total budget in excess of $6.8 billion per year and employs 1,358 military members, 1,068 civilians and an estimated 2,000 contractors worldwide. It manages between $50 and $60 billion in contracts at any one time.SMC's mission is to develop, demonstrate, acquire, field and sustain the world's best space and missile capabilities for the joint warfighter. Programs focus on space force enhancements including communications, navigation and tracking satellites; space support including launch systems and satellite control networks; and force application. |
